Weekly Potato Chip Feature

If there is one food in this world that I love, it would be “salty snacks” with the subcategory of potato chips being the focus. I kind of lump a lot of items under the “potato chip” banner. Things like pringles, tortilla chips, puffed vegetable chips, cheetos, fritos, etc. Basically most of the snacks in the “chip aisle”, even though they may not be made of potatoes.

I usually have tortilla chips & bagel chips always on hand. But I love to try out new chips flavors from Lay’s or one of the remaining indepenant producers. I just got a care package of about half a dozen different bags of mexican flavored Lay’s that I am excited to try out and post a review. I was also just at the grocery store and got 3 different bags of the 2009 Taste of America Lay’s, so those should be pretty good.

With so many different chips on hand right now (about 10). I’ll have plenty of material to write about for weeks.

As would be expected, chip flavors come and go. Here are some MIA flavors that I can’t find anymore, but would love to have again:
Ruffles – KC Masterpiece (much better the hickory BBQ ruffles)
Backer’s – german style chips (these were really good chips and they had celery salt as one of the seasoning ingredients. I got them at the Dutchman’s store one time, and they never carried them again.)

So enjoy the reviews. First up, Sabritas Chile Piquín.

Hops – mid-May 2009

As predicted, the centennial is growing like crazy. In fact the centennial has sent out a running, so now I’ve got two centennial vines trying to grow. I’m tempted to cut the running and move it to another spot in the hop garden, but I haven’t decided.

The golding is finally starting to grow, though not as vigorously as the centennial. Right now the golding has one vine that is about mid-chest in height. I’ve got a feeling that most of the cone production this year will be from the centennial. But who knows.

Quick tubini in tomato sauce and meatballs

I wanted something hot & quick for dinner tonight since I can only eat mac & cheese 3 days in a row. Plus I wanted to use up the 6 meatballs from GFS that have been developing a heavy case of freezer burn. So here is my under 30 minute meal, made with garbage from around the house. Since I didn’t want to go to the grocery for anything (with a faint whisper from Macaulay Culkin………he’s cooking up garbage.) Continue reading

Review – Pepsi Throwback

I had read about the whole “Throwback” thing in a packaging magazine online a few months back, and it piqued my interest. The article was basically a press release from Pepsico to let everyone know that they would be doing a limited release of Pepsi Throwback, Mt. Dew Throwback and Pepsi Natural. Well the Pepsi Natural really didn’t interest me, from it’s limited geographic release (10 major markets), to the “all natural ingredients”. Throwback on the other hand had me chomping at the bit to get some. Part of the interest being that the Throwbacks were going to be made with beet/cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Starting another batch of seedlings – update

It has been about 4 days and we have lots of good activity, both above and below ground. Most of the flats that i moved outside had roots coming out of the bottom of the individual cells, which i have not had happen before. So that is a positive looking sign for me about plant health. If this keeps going as I think that it will. I’ll be 100% sold on using SoilMoist for all my plantings, as well as blending my own soil from scratch. Double bonus baby. Continue reading

Front Yard and Back Yard views – Start of May

Here are a couple of quick pics of the back yard and a plot in the front yard. I spent part of sunday last week deciding on how to expand the garden in the back yard. It should be a fairly easy process, just a whole lotta digging. But the front yard, that has been a problem over the years.

There is this small plot of land in the front yard between the house and a brick sidewalk. Last year I planted two rose bushes, which were a hybrid called Margaret Chase Smith (after the US Senator from Maine). The only reason that I picked the Smith roses was that I recognized the name, because my sister had a biography of Smith from one of her college classes.

Well both of those roses barely lasted a year. So it’s time for a new plan. With the plan being to dig up that whole plot of land, and fill it with better soil. Since the soil that is currently there, is beyond sub-par.

I guess we’ll see how it turns out this year. But I’ll probably fill it will dill, poppy and a couple of other flowers. Just to keep it simple.

Bacon Breakfast Burrito Recipes

This is one of those restaurant recipes that I wanted to duplicate for a while. I mean how hard could it be to make. If a high schooler working at MickyD’s can make a breakfast burrito.

As a side note, I really don’t like eggs, especially undercooked eggs of any style (poached, soft cooked, sunny side up with a runny yolk, over easy). There is just something about the smell that turns my stomach. But enough about me, let get back to the burritos. Continue reading

Starting another batch of seedlings

As you may know. I’ve been having a lot of problems starting all my plants from seeds this year. But I haven’t given up entirely, because I’m not a quitter. So it’s back to the drawing board, for a new plan.

For this new batch of seedlings, I’m basically going to try and do the opposite of what I was doing before. So with that here goes Round 4, or at least the forth go around that I can remember. Continue reading
